Maureen’s Designs

Maureen and I opened our flower shop from scratch in March of 2007. Maureen grew up in the family business where she learned the secrets of a successful shop. In 1996, we were in the process of raising 4 sons and living in another state when Maureen’s parents wanted to retire. So, we allowed her parents to sell to an employee, even though Maureen always wanted her own shop.

Before starting our new venture, we visited several shops and talked to former colleagues in non-competing towns. We decided to jump on board with Teleflora. I worked in a different industry for years and assumed it was the right thing to do, after all, everyone knows Teleflora and FTD! The first year we were too busy to worry about things that appeared to work well. However, I began scrutinizing Teleflora’s statements and realized that they were making all of the money while we were doing all of the work. I wanted to fire them, but we were afraid that somehow we needed them in order to run our business.

I ran into Bill O’Shea at the Michigan State convention a couple of years ago. I instantly had a good feel for him as an individual and his new system called Floranext, but I was still unsure on the transition. After all, Teleflora did everything for us (except deliver flowers) and it was scary to imagine life without them. Finally, we made the decision to make the change on January 1, 2013. We were really worried about Valentine’s Day. Boy were we wrong. Our sales grew by 10% and we got to keep all of the money! 2013 was our most profitable year.

My only regret is that it took me 3 years to make the switch. We have been with Floranext for a little over a year now and they have been wonderful to work with. The entire staff is knowledgeable, responsive, and sincerely want to help your business succeed. If you are sick of being a slave to wire services I would encourage you to consider Floranext.
