Pop-Up Flower Shops – New Floral Trend

July 27th, 2021 Posted by Blog, Flower Trends 1 thought on “Pop-Up Flower Shops – New Floral Trend”

What are pop-up flower shops? They are typically temporary outdoor setups for traditional brick and mortar florists, to gain visibility and sell more fresh flowers, bouquets, arrangements, and more.

This trend offers so many opportunities to increase revenue, brand recognition, expanded business opportunities, and reach a new group of customers. No wonder pop-up florists are blossoming.

Growing your flower business can be a big commitment. Florists are also setting up pop-up shops to test the waters in a new location before committing to a permanent presence.

Location, Location Location

As you can guess, location is Key! Whether you set up in front of your business or at a local event, keep in mind four important factors when deciding to have a pop-up location:

  1. How Much Foot Traffic – how many people will be in that location?
  2. Foot Traffic Time – What times during the day are the highest with foot traffic?
  3. The location – Is there space for you to setup and is it visible enough to the foot traffic?
  4. Permission – Does your business permit allow for off-site activity? With the growth of mobile vendors, you may need to check with local government to make sure you are covered to display outside your business or in certain locations

Note: Some businesses may need to check their insurance policy to see if your coverage also allows for off-site.

Choosing to start up a pop-up shop can be a great way to collaborate with other local businesses and vendors in a particular area. Getting to know your community helps you to determine which area you’ll get the best business for your flower shop.

Pop-up Shop – Floral & Supplies

Whether you have decided to be in front of your shop or in another location, it’s always best to prepare what type of flowers and supplies you will need.

Display – Keep in mind the space you have. Will, you just set up a table, custom display, or flower cart? the choices are endless. Your display should represent your personality and business, this helps with brand recognition with new and current customers.

Supplies – It’s important to travel with ample supplies to prepare for custom work as well as transaction processes when on the go. Again with space, you may not have a lot of storage room. Keep it to the essentials, florist tape, florist wire, clippers, knife, a few containers, mobile POS system, and till.

Flowers – Some pop-up shops sell loose flowers, pre-made bouquets, and or arrangements. Before setting up your pop-up shop, decide what you want to offer. Remember, you may not have a lot of space, so only bring and display what you know you can sell.

Note: Give customers an experience by designing a few arrangements in front of them. Another great way to increase sales and additional foot traffic to your pop-up.

Market your Pop-Up Flower Shop

There are a variety of ways you can market and provide information about your pop-up flower shop. In the digital age we live in, your social media accounts should definitely include posts providing information about the location/time of your pop-up shop, as well as a sneak peek into what you will be selling.

A great way to increase your social media traffic is to post hashtags and include your location! Look to other influencers for help with choosing what keywords to use. In addition to using hashtags, putting location tags on images show customers exactly where you are. This makes it easy to find and shop at your pop-up shop.

Day in and day out, the life of a florist can become repetitious and a bit stressful. To break up the cycle, sometimes we like to run to humor for a bit of relief.

Flowers Can Fix Everything… Most of the Time

No matter what goes on around us, florists are always looking for ways to make a sale for any occasion. The one thing that normally never fails to put a smile on someone’s face is flowers. Whether it’s a funeral, birthday, anniversary, wedding, or just because, florists are happy to help! Remember to stay on top of marketing strategies and always continue to look for new business!

Floristry Memes- Designer’s Choice All Day

Hallelujah, I think we can all relate to this one. Designers’ choice is hands down, the greatest opportunity for florists to showcase their creativity. On delivery days, with hundreds of items to choose from, one can only imagine the excitement to start arranging. We love customers who are easygoing with orders and trust us with the process. After all, it is what we do for a living.

 When Florists Become Mind Readers

Sometimes with customers, we don’t know what to make out of their requests. It is up to us to determine what we think they want and talk through the process to ensure we will make our customers happy! Learning how to find solutions to the unknowns is an essential characteristic one must portray to be a successful florist.

The Most Expensive, Low-Budget Floral Requests

Tempering a customer’s expectations may be part of our daily routine depending on how ambitious our customer’s requests are. Flower prices are expensive. No, we are not grocery stores, we cannot price match, and that bouquet can not be achieved with $40. Although letting customers down easily is not the greatest feeling, we do our best to create a positive turnaround and leave our customers with a smile.

Here comes the bride…

Finally, as florists one of our largest revenue makers for our business is weddings. However, from consultations, requests, budgets, expectations vs. reality, weddings can become quite stressful. Yet we make it through time and time again to produce amazing florals for the picture-perfect wedding.

Floral Murals – Flower Shop Marketing Magic

June 18th, 2021 Posted by Floral Instagram, Florist Marketing 0 thoughts on “Floral Murals – Flower Shop Marketing Magic”

Flower shops across the country have started using floral murals and flower graffiti to bring attention to their business. They can offer a great tool to grab attention, show off a shop’s unique identity, and engage your community.

Floral Murals – Floral Marketing That Pays for Itself

Firstly, paying for advertising can add up quickly in such a competitive industry. To stay ahead of the curve, many florists are adding murals to brighten up their businesses. Indoor or outdoor, these marketing tactics generate a lot of attention. This type of advertising is a one-time fee that will in return pay for itself.

Instagram is one of the largest leading social media platforms that companies use every day to promote their flower shops. Murals have a way of creating a community around floral brands. Both customers and non-customers will gather around posting photos in front of floral murals.

As a result, the photos end up on social media, therefore, flower shops receive more traffic and business. With a tag and association to your flower shop, you’re golden. Keep the attention high and customers happy by adding a floral mural.

What’s Important to your Floral Business?

Flower shops that choose to use a mural spend lots of time planning exactly what they want as their design. Although the goal of a mural is to grab attention, creating a visual that is unique to your business is vital. One should place a strong emphasis on the elements of design for a floral mural. In other words, use your brand message as the focal point to your mural!

Successful florists are using murals as a marketing tool to leverage their business. They are promoting what’s important to them in a colorful way. What is important to your flower shop? What are your values as a business? With a blank canvas, the sky is the limit.

Floral Murals- The Reasons People are Flocking to Flower Shops

Murals generate tons of attention. The best part about them, you can’t turn off this type of advertising. They’re colorful, vibrant, and eye-catching. Therefore, customers will see this as an excellent opportunity to take photos or stop on in! For an everyday commute or someone going for a walk, a mural is a great way to make your floral brand a memorable destination.

Creating Connections in Your Community with Floral Murals

Not only does a mural bring attraction to floral shops, but it can also create business-to-business connections. That is to say, if other businesses look to you as inspiration, you’ll build up a good reputation in the end. Florists may contact your shop in hopes to get a mural done by the same artist for their business! Establishing positive relationships with other businesses and assisting them to build their brand will make you stand out.

Neighborhoods also benefit from a floral mural, here’s why! With the traffic that they receive, more and more people will make a point to stop at your destination out of curiosity. At the same time, it will generate a creative environment for your community to enjoy.

Reinforce Your Floral Brand

The list goes on and on when it comes to the benefits of adding a floral mural to a business. In addition to making connections in a community, murals leave behind a statement. Above all, this statement reminds people how much you care about your business and the legacy you want to carry on. Florists find this to be an excellent opportunity to reinforce their floral brand in a bold way.

Want to Find an Artist for Your Floral Mural?

To sum up, floral murals are a wonderful way to turn your mission statement into a captivating visual. Florists are using social media to find local floral muralists near them. For example, Instagram is a great platform to use in order to find floral graffiti artists based on your location. If you search #murals you will find links to other artists who have shared their work. To clarify, this search will show a variety of artwork displayed with different tags attributing back to particular artists.

Floral Logo - Combination Mark

Floral Logos – Designing Your Floral Brand

June 10th, 2021 Posted by Florist Marketing 0 thoughts on “Floral Logos – Designing Your Floral Brand”

For a florist, your logo is the essence of your brand. Perfecting a floral logo that communicates all of the important parts of your floral business can seem like a daunting task. Here are some logo designs for inspiration and tips to keep in mind when designing a company logo.

5 Floral Logo Design Types

The first place to start when making a floral logo is the design. There are a plethora of different design types to choose from. The main design styles of floral logos are Abstract Mark, Emblem Mark, Lettermark, Wordmark, and Combination Mark. Each type comes with its unique advantage that can help you to differentiate your brand from competitors.

1. Combination Floral Logo

A Combination mark is a perfect solution to tie together a brand name and image. This type of logo creates a clear message to the consumer as to the name of your brand as well as a graphic to associate it to.  This type of logo is perhaps the most popular among floral businesses and allows you to showcase your brand and personality.

2. Wordmark Floral Logo

Wordmark logos are also known as logotypes. Wordmark logos are font style-based and focus only on the business name itself. Wordmark logos are used when a business has a distinct or specific name, for instance, Google. When choosing a wordmark floral logo, choose a font that best represents your business and personality.  This type of logo is popular among new businesses and easily to be printed and used on various marketing materials.

3. Emblem Floral Logo

Emblem Logo via Magnolia Farms Florist

Emblem floral logos contain font and or imagery inside a symbol or an icon. Emblem logos are more traditional looking for those who want to portray a traditional brand. Emblem logos can become very ornate, remember to keep it simple as you want to use your logo on different materials for marketing.

4. Lettermark floral Logo

Main-street-florist-logo

A lettermark floral logo is all about being simple. Lettermark logos are typically are an abbreviation of a brand’s name or its initials to allow customers to easily remember the brand.  Lettermark logos are very popular with company brands that have long names.

6. Abstract Floral Logo

Space

Abstract logos incorporate an abstract/geometric shape instead of an actual image. Abstract floral logos are easily scalable and a great way to be creative in your branding. Abstract logos are typically designed by a graphic designer who uses color, shape, and design to create a meaningful logo for your business.

Let Your Floral Logo Reveal Your Brand Personality

color-logo-palettes

Font and color alone can convey your brand’s personality. If your brand is fun and playful or serious and sophisticated, choosing the appropriate typography and colors to reflect that is necessary.

Did you know that different colors can portray a different mood or feeling to a consumer? Here are some color palettes to help with designing your logo. Keep in mind the feeling you want to portray is important to best represent your brand’s personality.

Monochromatic

Monochromatic uses various shades of the same color to showcase a polished and minimalist look for your brand. Using Monochromatic can be a bit difficult as there is no other contrasting color to make your logo and brand pop.

Corresponding

Corresponding colors that appear next to each other on the color wheel are used in a corresponding color palette.

Complementary

Colors that appear opposite from each other on the color wheel are considered complementary. These colors are great for giving your logo a more dramatic look and feel. Complementary colors are more visually stimulating to consumers compares to the others.

Triadic

Good things come in three right? With Triadic the colors that are spaced evenly around the color wheel are the triadic colors. This color palette can be a bit difficult as you may need to use different tones and shades. Always let one color be the main color and the other two as accents.

However you choose to use color, it can be a very effective tool to convey the personality of your brand. An ineffective color scheme can ruin even the greatest of logo designs, so ensure as much thought goes into the color as the design to stand out from your competition.

Florist-competitor-research

Your Floral Logo vs Your Competition

What makes your business different from your competitors? Find a way to incorporate this in your logo in a unique and meaningful way. Anything too busy or distracting will not create a lasting image in your customer’s mind, so keep in mind that less is more. Standing out from your competitors is important for everyone. In business, anything that keeps you ahead of your competitors is vital, so don’t neglect your logo as a marketing tool.

Every business has unique elements to it, whether it’s your people, culture, unique products, prices, quality, etc. Find out what it is that sets you apart from the rest and incorporate this into your logo.  No matter what design you land on, it is important to keep your logo clean and well-thought-out, as a sloppy-looking logo could plant doubt into a customer’s mind about the reliability of your floral brand.

Communicating Customer Loyalty and Trust

Some of the biggest brands in the world have excelled at building a loyal customer base.

Having an easily recognizable logo is very important for any business. Your business logo will be seen anywhere from internet searches to social media to business cards and signs. The goal is to have a logo easily recognizable so that a consumer can instantly relate it back to your brand.

A logo that has a strong relationship with representing what a brand has to offer will cling to a consumer’s mind. Repeat and loyal customers are an aim for any business and should be for yours as well in the competitive floral industry.

florist-customer-loyalty

Your Logo Should Leave a Lasting Impression

Leaving a lasting impression should be your goal when designing a brand logo for your floral business. When somebody hears the name of your business, the goal is to allow them to visualize something in their head about your business.

To illustrate, the logo is the jelly to the business while the name’s the peanut butter. The two go hand in hand and work together to push your brand’s reach to the world.

Take the time to create a floral logo that will get you recognized, build a loyal brand, and separate yourself from everybody else!

Promote Your Flower Business Using Instagram Video – 5 Ideas

June 1st, 2021 Posted by Florist Marketing 1 thought on “Promote Your Flower Business Using Instagram Video – 5 Ideas”

Are you active on Instagram and using it to promote your flower business and florist website? If so, you have taken a step in the right direction! According to WYZOwl, 84% of people are willing to buy a product or service after watching a video.

Instagram has five (!) different ways to use videos as a tool to leverage your brand and establish relationships with your consumers. Learning how and when to use the different types of videos will be the key to marketing a successful floral business.

Instagram Video for Florists

Source: @theunlikelyflorist

1. Instagram Videos for Florists

When scrolling through Instagram, too many static images can bore a customer, which is why videos are so important. Take note that these videos will stay on your profile feed.

Instagram videos are commonly watched without sound, making captions a powerful way to portray your content. There are several apps and services that you can use to upload your videos to add text, music, and stickers!

Great Example: Tulipina

2. Use IGTV to Teach your Floral Customers

IGTV is both a stand-alone app and a service found within Instagram. IGTV can be located on your companies Instagram profile, also known as your channel. With the feature allowing videos anywhere from 15 seconds to 10 minutes long, this offers a lot of room for the opportunity to create a tutorial or begin a course.

Great Example: Floret

3. Going Live!

What you see is what you get! On Instagram Live, you should show who you are, what you stand for, and what you do! Instagram Live videos are in the moment and very authentic because there is no retake or pre-recorded option. This feature is a great way to advertise new flower order arrivals and demonstrate how to assemble arrangements! Show your customers that you care about the work you do by showcasing your creative environment. When using Instagram Live consistently, traffic will increase, and your customers will trust your brand!

Great Example: Mayesh

4. Tell a story with an Instagram Story!

Instagram stories act as mini commercials. These stories delete after 24 hours unless highlighted on your profile. These are an effective way to express quick and direct messages to your audience. Using videos on your Instagram story to showcase a promotion, new product, or sale will generate excitement before a grand reveal. With the additional feature of polls, questionnaires, and votes being available, the opportunity for customer interaction is also higher.

Great Example: The Unlikely Florist

5. Keepin’ it Reel

Reels are a fun way to share 15-seconds of unscripted, natural content. They are comparable to Tik Tok, which features shortened entertaining videos. Being candid and spontaneous will keep customers engaged in the material. To achieve a successful 15-second video, consider separating it into 5, 3-second clips. For any public account, this feature can increase your customer reach.

It is never too late to try out all of the different ways to incorporate videos into your business marketing strategy. Taking advantage of the marketing tools at your fingertips and following marketing trends will keep you connected with your customers.

Great Example: Foxglove and Grace, Kristen Griffith

Environmental Friendly Florist

Building a More Eco Conscious Flower Shop

February 24th, 2021 Posted by Blog, Florist Resources 5 thoughts on “Building a More Eco Conscious Flower Shop”

Eco-friendly, sustainable, and going green seem to be just buzz words but they are also ideas that seem to have some staying power. With Millennials and Gen-Z concerns over the environment, there is a lot of selling power in “going green”. So how can you be a more conscious floral shop that not only increases sales but also helps the environment?

Shop Local

All small businesses need a little boost nowadays and supporting local businesses helps you build critical relationships within your community. If you have a local candy or coffee store, consider using their products for your box of chocolates. If you have a local craft shop it may be the best place to get ribbon, tulle, and other wrappings. Does a local farmer produce flowers that you could use in your designs? While social media and online marketing are important the old-fashioned ‘word of mouth’ can still be just as important. If you send business their way, they are likely to send it yours.

Mindful Sourcing

It may be hard to be critical of sourcing your materials since it feels like you don’t have many options especially if you live in a smaller area. Knowing your supplier and your options is a major hit or miss when it comes to creating an eco-conscious and sustainable store. Does your provider gather your product in a fair-trade manner? Is there a potential for unsafe working conditions on the farms where your flowers come from? Are the growers protecting the land and not damaging it? There are many ethical questions and concerns that you as a shopper should be aware of.

Recycle When Possible

There is a lot of waste in the floral world from the plastic the flowers come in, to the cardboard they are shipped in. There are also any plastic containers you send your product out in and the glass containers you build in! If you want a more eco-friendly shop it may be time to put some procedures into place like being mindful of how much wire or paper you use, returning the boxes your flowers are shipped in to be reused or offering return discounts for vases that come back to your shop.

floranext-hiring

Turn Off Non-Essentials

As florists, we often get into a routine of flipping on various tools as soon as we enter the store but find ourselves rarely using the item we turned on. Consider whether these tools are essential and whether or not you can replace them with something else. Try opening windows instead of using your A/C or rely on natural daylight rather than overhead lights. These may seem like smaller steps, but they can make a big difference.

Sustainable and green floristry is just like everyday floristry but is more experienced with the wellbeing of the environment, growers, and flower recipients. Sustainable florists provide their customers with products that don’t leave a destructive carbon footprint in their wake. Is this the type of florist you want to be?

Florists, are there certain things you do at your shop that make your business eco Conscious.

Florist Valentine’s Day 2021 Trends!

February 23rd, 2021 Posted by Survey 5 thoughts on “Florist Valentine’s Day 2021 Trends!”

A big thank you to everyone who participated in Floranext’s annual florist Valentine’s Day survey, which underlines some clearly positive trends.  It looks like this was a very healthy holiday for the retail floral industry. The ongoing social distancing rules along with the visibility of floral on reality TV shows on Netflix and HBO have been positive for the industry.

vday-survey-email-image

This year’s holiday sales were very strong, despite Valentine’s Day falling on a Sunday. It may be that a more socially distanced year has made people more likely to send flowers to their loved ones. With customers less likely to spend on floral substitutes like dinners and trips, flowers are the obvious gift item.

Valentine's Day 2021 - Florist Survey

Web orders were way up this year. Customers are getting even more used to the ease of buying online. Not surprisingly, walk-ins fell dramatically – we are definitely not out of the woods with the pandemic yet. It will be interesting to see whether the walk-ins recover next year.

Dozen Rose’s price range was very wide, but most were between $70 and $100 USD. The highest reported were $175 and $225 (they didn’t fit on our chart)!

After red roses, arranged flowers were the next most popular item this year – allowing florists to showcase their skills. Candy and chocolates beat out the traditional teddy bear for the top spot.

A somewhat large number of shops (16%) were closed on Sunday. Customers may have bought early this year to avoid missing out or maybe because they weren’t sure if shops would be open.

Valentine's Day 2021 - Florist Survey

Temporary staffing remains a common custom for flower shops for the busiest days of the year. About 75% of shops added new staff, with widely varying numbers, likely depending on their size. Most shops did not rent vans for the holiday specifically, likely choosing to use driver vehicles.

Valentine's Day 2021 - Florist Survey

Valentine’s Day started early for many shops, with 40% getting holiday orders in January – underlining the value of updating websites and getting marketing emails out early in the season.

Valentine's Day 2021 - Florist Survey

Did you do something different with Walk-Ins or Pickups due to COVID-19? If so, what did you do?

There were a lot of curbside pickups stations, many mentions of masks required, quite a few limited the number of staff inside the shop, and/or limiting the number of customers inside the shop

What (if anything) would you do differently next Valentine’s Day?

There was a lot of focus on the weather including “praying for no snow” and “pray for temps above 0 degrees!”, and a unique new word, “Snovid!”.

Some strategic recommendations that might stay post-pandemic: Keep door closed to walk-in; more efficient” and “have a pickup location”, “We really liked the parking lot pick up spots.”

Some practical advice on preparation“More ready to go bouquets”, “have more premade gift baskets”and “More arrangements made earlier for early walk ins.”

Many want to simplify customer choices: “Pregreen more the week ahead. Limit the number of items available on website.” Also “less choices for flower arrangements” and “Definitely less balloons, less other rose colors and more red roses. Less variety on catalog to choose from.”

Some shops felt they could have taken more orders with appropriate supplies and staff “Order more red roses”, and “Increase design staff” and “Turn off my website sooner” and “We were a little too conservative on accepting orders.”

___

Thank you for participating in our annual floral Valentine’s Survey – we see some very positive signs for the floral industry. Wishing you well for 2021 from Floranext – where we continue to help independent florists succeed!

Results were based on the 260 retail florists surveyed by Floranext between February 15th through February 19th. Florists were based in the US (82%), Canada (8.3%), and international (9.5%).

All About the Product

Your typical in-house add-ons usually include butterfly, bees, and other special picks, mylar balloons, plush animals, novelty accessories, upgraded card options, and more. These products shouldn’t just be lying at the side of your register, use them! Depending on your customers’ reason for purchase offering an additional gift is always a good option. Make sure you pick up some additional Valentine-themed gifts for the season. The best thing about these add-on items is they never expire!

Floral Arrangement Tiers
Add-ons are not just about additional gifts but can be additional flowers as well! Most florists have a tiered system on their website with words like “standards, deluxe, and premium” where customers can pick up more luxurious arrangements at a higher cost. Unfortunately, however, most florists don’t offer this same service in-house. Whether it be on the phone or over the counter try to sell your deluxe and premiums off the website.

Train your staff
One of the best ways to keep your sales high is to take the time to train your staff. There is no point in having add-on options if your staff isn’t selling them! The last thing you want to do in the hectic time before holidays like Valentine’s Day is extra training, but it may be what is needed. Make sure your staff knows all you can offer and how to engage with customers in a manner that supports not only the business but the client as well.

Valentine’s Sweet Treats
You should make your shop the one-stop-spot, especially for holidays. If you can try to develop a relationship with a local candy shop and see if you can sell some of their products in your shop. Usually, most stores will have sales for bulk wholesale similar to what you are used to with flowers. Not only does this up your sales it also creates a relationship that can help the local community which is much needed at this time.

Build a Connection
There is a strong chance a big portion of your sales for Valentine’s day or any holiday are previous customers which are great, return sales are paramount but this also means you may have gotten the chance to know them. By getting to know your clientele you will get to know their tastes and preferences. Do they prefer kitschy accessories, or do they prefer home decor? Maybe they are shopping for children and would like more plush options. Knowing what your customers like will help you make better purchasing decisions that will fly out the door.

There is a universal rule that your add-ons should not increase the final total by more than 25 percent, so this is a good place to start when it comes to making your upgrade and add-ons for the season and going forward!
