Valentine's Day - Florist Tips

Florist Valentine’s Day Survival Guide

January 6th, 2016 Posted by Jessica Blog, Florist Marketing, Florist Profits, Florist Resources, florist-software, Valentine's Day 19 thoughts on “Florist Valentine’s Day Survival Guide”

Valentine’s Day is the busiest and potentially most profitable day for any flower shop. So what can you do to make your life a little easier (and make more money!). Here are some tips from Floranext. Let us know your suggestions in the comments section below!

Valentine's Day - Florist Tips

image via

Two Weeks Before Valentine’s Day

  1. Email marketing – Send out a $5 off coupon to customers. Make sure you pull all the email addresses from your florist POS system
  2. Codified Arrangements – Make codified or flower specific orders before designer’s choice orders to ensure you can fill orders properly.
  3. Pre-buy flowers – order roses early from trusted sources. Pre order 1/2 of what you think you need and get the rest as you need it from wholesalers

The Week of Valentine’s Day

  1. Website Update – update your website prices!
  2. Pre-Arranging – Hand tie greens for vase drop in, store in waxed boxes and spray with anti desiccant
  3. Pricing – If possible have a lower price point with 30 or 40 cm roses for cash and cary
  4. Single Roses – Have many single roses wrapped
  5. Big sellers – a single wrapped roses with box of candy attached display these in a basket at counter
  6. Save Money! – Colored roses are always cheaper than red so do something to promote them
  7. Promote! – Enclose an offer for March in every delivery (offer should be an inexpensive in-store pickup)
  8. Delivery Manager – nominate one employee as the delivery manager
  9. Prearrange delivery – route out deliveries you know already.
  10. Refer to last year – if you sold 800 stems of red roses you will probably need that and few more
  11. Keep impeccable records – Day of week, weather, staffing, what was ordered, what was not sold, hours open.

The Day Before/On

  1. Buy lunch – to keep everyone in the shop.
  2. Roses – when you pre-make roses in a vase before they go out, be sure to change water and also rinse the stems that have been in water.

Florist Techology

  1. Delivery routing – is standard with florist POS systems now (including Floranext). Try out yours to make sure you know how it works.
  2. Delivery notification – head off those phone calls from customers by sending out delivery confirmation emails. Your floral POS should have this built in.

After Valentine’s Day

  1. Appreciation – Give your staff a token of appreciation for their commitment to making Valentine’s Day a success – free flowers to bring home!

Should You Upgrade Your Flower Shop to Windows 10?

July 23rd, 2015 Posted by Admin Florist Point of Sale, Florist POS, florist technology, florist-software 0 thoughts on “Should You Upgrade Your Flower Shop to Windows 10?”

On July 29th,2015 Microsoft will be releasing Windows 10, their newest operating system – should you upgrade your flower shop?

Those users who remember the last, disastrous Windows 8 version – with a confusing tile interface that was built for touch screens – may be questioning whether Windows 10 is more of the same.

Should you upgrade your flower business or wait? We took the new Windows OS for a spin and while there’s no big rush to update your system, we generally like what we see.

Reasons to Upgrade Your Flower Shop to Windows 10

    • The start menu is back! The start menu from Windows 7 that was missing in 8 is back with an expanded look. You can now find the power button, the Setting command as well as most used apps and the ability to scroll down through all your apps in alphabetical order. The expanded look also includes the tiles from Windows 8. There you can pin your favorite apps and view live tiles for News, Weather and other apps that show you up-to-the-minute information. It’s a good blend of Windows 7 & 8.1.

  • Microsoft Edge – Their all-new browser is “built to give you a better web experience”, says Microsoft. “With this browser, you can use Write2 or type notes directly on webpages and share them with others, read online articles free of distraction, and save your favorite reads for later access.” Think how great this would be to find a wedding post and add your own ideas and comments to it and send it along to a bride. That would definitely impress!

    • Cortana, their personal assistant will help keep track of your important florist wedding appointments, help with traffic analysis, set reminders and give personalized suggestions. “Cortana3 works across your day and your devices to help you get things done. By learning more over time, Cortana becomes more personal and useful to you. Cortana’s also best at reminders, delivering them at the right time and place so you forget less and can do more.” explains Microsoft.
  • Well Tested Microsoft has been beta testing the software since October 2014 with over 5 million people in their Windows Insider Program. This is a global community of fans who tested and commented on the new Windows to make it ready for release!

Reasons for Your Flower Shop to Wait on Windows 10

  1. Is your equipment ready? If you are running the latest version of either Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1, you should fine. If not, go here for more detailed information on what is required.
  2. Do you love your Windows 7? If you loved these on your Windows 7, you might want to hold off on updating but you have till January 14th, 2020 before Microsoft ends Windows 7 support.
  3. Older Printer Scanner – Your printer and scanner are older and you are not sure if they will work with Windows 10. Wait and check with manufacturers to make sure they are compatible before upgrading. You don’t want to upgrade and then need to purchase a new printer or scanner to get the work done at your shop.

Most Florists Will Like Windows 10

Overall we like where Microsoft is going with Windows 10 and we think most florists will too – better look, smart, dynamic, personalized operating system. That said, the first few months of a new OS can be bumpy so there’s no big rush to upgrade right away.

Good luck with the decision and let us know how it goes for your flower shop!

How can you test if your Florist Website is is Mobile Optimized?

You can easily test if your website is responsive is to open it on a browser like Google Chrome and change the size of your screen. If parts of the website start to get cut off or move out of the field of vision, your site is not responsive. Prep for Autumn: Don’t Let Big Box Stores Take Your Flower Shop’s Fall Sales

September 3rd, 2014 Posted by Jessica Blog, Florist Marketing, Florist Resources, Florists for Change, Opening a Flower Shop 3 thoughts on “Prep for Autumn: Don’t Let Big Box Stores Take Your Flower Shop’s Fall Sales”

The other busy season is almost upon florists again yet many may not even know it. We’re not talking about the Christmas through Mother’s Day rush that keeps us busy in the spring – this is autumn! Here are some tips on how to market your flower shop for fall!

Flower Shop Marketing - Fall

Are you showing off your Fall florals on the home page of your website?

The season that sends many potential customers rushing to big box stores, hardware stores, and even greenhouses when they should be rushing to your flower shop. This is an important three-month decorating season that florists have much to offer to. Below are some tips to make sure you’re taking advantage of the autumn sales that should be yours. Be sure to read them over and leave us some tips of your own in the comment section.

Flower Shops Can Offer More

Many people think of florists as a spot for gifts, special occasions, and indoor arrangements, but flower shops can offer so much more. Florists offer unique inventory that your customers won’t find and a generic home improvement shop. Your customers need to understand that your shop offers hand-crafted specialty items that will stand out from the cookie-cutter décor that many settle for.

Wreaths, table top gardens, entry pieces, and centerpieces are just a few of the opportunities that florists have to show off their craft and give your customers stunning new looks to experiment with. Don’t be afraid to emphasize that your small, local-owned flower shop is the place for your customers to shop. Shopping locally or shopping small is very popular at the moment (Small Business Saturday is just around the corner!).

Flower Shop Marketing - Fall

What to stock for your flower shop

Fall occupies a special place in many people’s hearts, so be sure to stock something special and seasonal for them! In addition to all of the materials needed for the items above, don’t be afraid to compete for outdoor space! Must stock fall products include hay bales, corn stalks, scarecrows, pumpkins and mini pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, fall door wreaths etc. There’s no reason to lose out to franchised hardware store for sales your shop could easily make.

Show your store off

Let potential customers know that your flower shop should be their one stop shop for fall decorating before they even pull into the parking lot. An eye-catching outdoor display in front of your flower shop will show people that you have exciting fall décor to offer. A fall window will give you a chance to show off your technical skills and draw in passersby.

Of course, now days your digital storefront has nearly as much impact as your actual storefront. On your website, be sure to show off your fall product category with new banners, products, or even backgrounds. If you’re already active on social media, now is a good time to begin teasing your customers with shots of new inventory as well as new fall designs.

Another way to go about this is to show off the fall items you have in stock each week or 2 on your blog, website, or favorite social media platforms. Your customers will appreciate the inside look at your business with these “What’s Fresh this Week” style posts. Shops that have been diligent in collecting customer emails will have an extra step up with the ability to send out email marketing and maybe even a coupon to promote decorating services and fall products.

Is your flower shop making the most of the Fall season?

Given all the advantages of shopping with a florist for fall décor, it’s surprising how many flower shops are missing out. Following the steps above will help ensure your business is capturing as much fall business as possible over the three month season. How does your shop rank? Let us know what creative ideas you’ve put in place to keep customers coming back to you as their one-stop-fall-shop.

May 22nd, 2014 Posted by bill Florist Ecommerce, Florist Marketing, Florist Resources, florist technology, Florist Websites, florist-software, mobile website 1 thought on “2 Ways To Manage Your Florist Social Networks!”

A solid social media strategy is crucial to your flower shop business plan. You know you need to post frequently but it just takes sooooooo long to post and to find out what your floral competitors are posting that often it just doesn’t get done.

Here are two different platforms that we think will help you increase productivity as well as decrease your time spent on social media.

Let the Owl help you streamline your flower shop social media…

HootSuite for Your Flower Shop Social MediaIf you’re looking to streamline your plan, HootSuite is a free tool that you will want to check out. HootSuite lets you easily manage and post your shop’s news to multiple social network accounts from one unified dashboard. It will also provide comprehensive reporting options so that you can track the value and effectiveness of your social efforts. For example, in the analysis, you can find out how many followers clicked your recent tweet, helping you decide which tweets are the most popular with your twitter followers. HootSuite also gives you the option of scheduling tweets and post ahead of time so that your shop can stay active online. Try creating posts at the start of your day and scheduling them to go live throughout. This will help you stay consistent online without pulling you away from running your flower business. HootSuite does have a pro edition which gives you more features but the free edition should work great for your shop needs.

Perch yourself on your floral competitor’s window…

Free App for Florist's PERCHWon’t it be great to know what your floral competitors are saying on social media?  But trolling all the sites can be such a time drain! To check on what your florist competitors are saying, let Perch do it! Perch is an award-winning free mobile app that tracks Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, Foursquare, Groupon and Living Social and gives you what your competitors have posted plus reviews from sites like Yelp and Google.

Perch easily spots companies like yours with location-aware technology, and lets you decide which floral shops you would like to see more of their postings and reviews.

You can receive an email report daily or weekly or just go to your Perch app and see what your floral rivals are up to. It’s a very handy tool.

Give these two social media platforms a try, they can help make it easier in your day-to-day flower shop business management.
